Audio Files

I recorded the audio for my project today. I used a h4 zoom and used a small quiet room. The girls who helped me out were very accomodating and they didn’t mind going over and over the scripts.

I have uploaded the sound files to soundcloud:

Stretch Marks:

Brain Injury:

I started adding in sound effects to hirsutism as I am in the middle of animating that story.

I will be adding in sound effects to each story to bring it to life and give it more character.

Finding Actors to Record Audio

I have sourced 4 female actors to record audio for my project. They are student actors so they will be used to doing many takes to make sure I get the right one. I will assign a character to each woman and record them using a Zoom h4 is a small quiet room. I will source materials like pillows, duvets, couches etc to lay around the room so the soft furnishes will enhance the audio.

I am recording on Saturday the 11th April.

Prototype | Audio Visual Piece

When I was searching through people’s blogs about their facial flaws I found a beautiful piece about a person’s story with their scars. I decided to crop it down and get an actor to read it. What I like most about this project is that I can make all sorts of different media to portray a real persons story. I always wanted to make an abstract video but always felt I didn’t have the right topic so when I read this blog I knew I wanted to make an abstract video for it. I made the video using Final Cut Pro.Screen Shot 2015-01-19 at 01.59.58

The quote from the blog is as follows:

Beauty is a concept I struggle with—what it means, why it matters. I struggle because huge chunks of my life have not been beautiful. They have been ugly, marred by trauma, with pain, and anger.

We think of beauty and often visualize glossy magazine pages and wafer thin models. We see beauty as superficial—eye color, hair texture, and numbers on a scale. We see beauty as something to be measured and weighed.

I don’t see beauty that way. I see beauty as the grace point between what hurts and what heals, between the shadow of tragedy and the light of joy. I find beauty in my scars.

We all have scars, inside and out. We have freckles from sun exposure, emotional trigger points, broken bones, and broken hearts.

However our scars manifest, we need not feel ashamed but beautiful.

It is beautiful to have lived, really lived, and to have the marks to prove it. It’s not a competition—as in “My scar is better than your scar”—but it’s a testament of our inner strength.

It takes nothing to wear a snazzy outfit well, but to wear our scars like diamonds? Now that is beautiful.

Prototype | Written Story No.1

I got chatting to an American girl on experience project and she told me about her experiences having hirsutism(a condition that makes hair growth on the face). I asked her to send me a full story which she did:

I noticed something was wrong with me in fifth grade, when I started growing stomach and chest hair. I never told anyone because I was embarrassed. Around seventh grade, some kid came up to me, looked under my neck and said ” you have a beard”. I never noticed it until he said something. A few days later, a group of girls also looked under me and said ” oh my god, you DO have a beard”. It was devastating. I started shaving my face every day, which was very uncomfortable and irritated my skin so I would go to school everyday with a red, blotchy neck. I had horrible self esteem and was convinced I was a guy. For years I would spend hours shaving everything to try and feel normal. It stops me from having any relationships, because I can’t handle anymore rejection and judgment. I can go out to town without makeup sometimes because the opinions of strangers do not bother me. I am trying to come to terms with it and I hope I can one day. I have been told I look like a man by multiple people, including my brother. However, because of it, I am learning to be strong. I inform other girls, that despite what society or your peer say, as long as you love you, that’s all that matters. I honestly would not trade my imperfections for anything. Without them, I wouldn’t be who I am today.

I took this story and created my first written story illustration. I would like to do this by using parallax so when you open the story and scroll down the image moves with it or changes. I made up a prototype of this.  The first image is what you see when you open the story the second image is what you see when you scroll down. storyv1_p1 storyv1_p2

Finding People!

It is so disheartening when you are so reeved up to do a project and you email and message people to help you out and get no reply 😦

I will soldier on.

After creating the audio piece from a girl’s blog post I started to think of this of a way to get people to really open up. If I cannot find people to meet face to face then I can create something out of their words. I needed to look for a place where people could open up anonymously, the internet was a good place to start. I joined reddit, and experience project. I posted a call for people to share their facial imperfections stories. I had trouble posting to reddit and and what I was posting was not correct layout like I wasn’t asking for advice etc. Waiting on replies.

Design Phase | Blogs

I have been researching people’s blogs about different skin conditions. I found this very helpful to read about how people suffering from skin conditions feel. It is nice to see that they are all mostly positive about their appearance. During my last supervisor meetings the lecturers suggested I could make audio clips using the words from blogs like this. I think this could be very powerful as I said in a previous blogs I would like to use video and photographs. I could use a multitude of media to get the message across. I am currently editing a blog down so I can use it and see how it sounds. Here are some other amazing blog posts I found that I think would work really well (Click on image to bring you to the blog post).
