Inspiration Phase | Danielle Delph

Artist Danielle Delph often wonders what it would have been like to grow up alongside her mother.  Her project is called ‘if i had known my mother back then”.

“I’ve always wondered if my mom and I would have been friends had we grown up together.
Would we be in the same classes? Would we have the same sense of humor? Would people tell us we were inseparable?
After seeing myself in her childhood photos, I’m pretty sure we would have been great friends.”

Once I saw this project I was impressed with how well she photoshopped herself into old weathered pictures. I didn’t think about using filters in my project because I wanted it to be natural. But after seeing these pictures I am considering it. Filters are very on trend now a days. It would give the book a nice vintage vibe too.

Inspiration Phase | Celebrities

I was thinking about if people would open up about their imperfections and weather they would want to be photographed. So I thought about some celebrities who have imperfections and are proud of them. They are in the spotlight everyday and don’t let their imperfections hold them back. I think they are inspirations for people everywhere that feel insecure.

Tina Fey – The scar is the result of a traumatic childhood slashing, which the actress does not like to discuss.

Padma Lakshmi – The vicious scar was the result of a car crash Padma survived at age 14.

Joaquin Phoenix – he was born with a cleft lip and the scar is the result of corrective surgery.

sealSeal – he has skin condition known as discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE)

Inspiration Phase | Editing Apps

I decided to look at different apps that alter people’s photos of themselves. I am familiar with Instagram so I know that filters are God to some people. I decided to try one that alters the face completely. For many people with facial imperfections they choose this option because they don’t want someone to stare at a picture of them not looking how they want to look. It is important for many celebrities to have magazines and websites photoshop them before they use their picture. They want to convey the ‘perfect’ image. Other celebrities are completely against photoshop and some have sued companies for using it on them. The app I used is called Photo Editor. Here are the results. The app slims my face  and nose. It smooths out my skin and adds make up. I would hope that women can be open about their appearance and can just use their real photographs.

Inspiration Phase | More to Life

This documentary is about people living with the skin condition, vitiligo. It shows numerous people sharing their stories, from when they started to get vitiligo to today when they can’t shake hands with people at mass unless the other person allows them. It was made to raise awareness about the condition as people has misconceptions about it. Many people believe that it is contagious. It is a hereditary. It is important for me to understand different skin conditions if I am going to make this project. I would like to understand what the person is going through and not have to ask too many questions that would make them feel uncomfortable.

Inspiration Phase | Acne App

Spruce is an app for acne sufferers. It is designed so that the user uploads photographs of  where they have acne and information about their health. Within 24 hours a dermatologists gets back to them with a plan to treat their acne. This is a great idea for people who don’t want to spend big bucks on a dermatologist or doctors in their local area. They are very costly and this method costs $40. I have never heard of a service like this before for people with acne. What I really like about this is that even though you do not physically see a doctor, you get the same experience as seeing one. The section I like best is the follow up section where you can ask your doctor questions. If you had to do that without the app you would have to make another appointment. This way makes it easier and less costly.

Inspiration Phase | Acne Infographic

This infographic was created by Natural News. I find this style to be a bit dated and stereotypical. It is more female focused with the illustrations and not directed to men at all. I do like the idea of having the percentages in a product like maybe an acne cream rather than perfume as perfume has nothing to do with acne. The price stats are a nice add because it shows the viewers how much big companies are making of their imperfections.

Inspiration Phase | Infographic

Mario Badescu Skin Care created this handy infographic for their clients. I found the statistics an interesting add and I think it would be useful in my project. Maybe I could create an infographic about skin imperfections. There would be statistics about how many people have each type of facial imperfection; acne, burn marks, scars, vitiligo etc. The cartoon style is nicely carried through he whole design. The way the chart is created here is cool because they didn’t write in the circle like some designers do or make a legend, they made an arrow which stayed with the cartoon style.
